The boys basketball season was one that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
While teams battled through pauses and schedule changes because of the pandemic, area players persevered and put forth impressive showings all season.
The final All Times Leader team of the winter sports season is being announced today. The All Times Leader Boys Basketball Team features 16 of the area’s top players.
The team is chosen by the T-L Sports Staff with the help of area coaches.
The captain of the annual team is Harrison Central’s Kobe Mitchell.
Here’s a capsule look at the team members:
KOBE MITCHELL, Harrison Central– This senior did basically everything except take tickets for the Huskies and head coach Justin Clifford this winter.
The University of Akron signee averaged 30 points a game and finished his brilliant career with 2,421 points, which ranks 15th all time in Ohio history and fourth in the OVAC.
Along with his scoring, Mitchell pulled down seven rebounds and he also passed out six assists.
Mitchell was named the Division III State Player of the Year as well as First-Team All-Ohio, All-Eastern District and District Player of the Year. He was All-Buckeye 8 and All-District 5. He played in the District 5 All-Star Game.
“Kobe deserves every honor he’s received because he had just an exceptional season and career,” Clifford said. “I was just fortunate enough to be along for the ride. He’s as good of a person off the court as he as good of a player on the court. We’re certainly going to miss him for much more than just his basketball abilities.”
KASON POWELL, Barnesville — This junior standout blossomed into a go-to-scorer for Coach Johnny Hines squad this season.
Powell scored at a 16 points per game clip and hit 49, 3-point goals. He finished with 97 rebounds, 37 assists and 19 steals.
Powell was recognized on the All-Eastern District, All-District 12 and listed among the All-Ohio team.
“Kason has the ability to get as hot as fire,” Hines said. “H played a solid, all-around game, but when he is feeling it, he can flat out shoot the basketball. We’re super excited to have him back for one more season. He’s an amazing young man on and off the court.”
DAVID ZWACK, Bellaire — This Big Reds’ senior was a floor general for Coach J.R. Battista’s team this season.
Zwack averaged a solid 14 points, five rebounds and four assists for the campaign. He was also named to the District 12 All-Star Game and All-Eastern District, District 12 and Buckeye 8 squads.
“David is a hoops junkie, who through hard work and a strong commitment to the game made himself into a good player,” Battista said. “He’s a great kid on and off the court. He has a bright future.”
DYLAN GREGORCIC, Bridgeport — This senior put forth an impressive and memorable season for Coach Donnie Cash’s squad.
Gregorcic averaged 14.6 points and four rebounds per contest. He also led the area with 64, 3-point goals and finished second in the area with an 81.7% foul shooting clip.
Gregorcic was also named to the All-District 12, All-Eastern District and All-MOVL squads.
“Dylan was our main three-point threat and one of our top two scorers,” Cash said. “He expanded his game and it on the floor as well. He and the other five seniors will be missed.”
JAKE MAYLE, Buckeye Local — This senior standout had a break-out season for the Panthers and head coach Chris Heaton.
Mayle filled the stat sheet every night out for the Panthers, averaging 15.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.3 steals per contest.
Mayle was listed on the All-Eastern District and District 5 teams.
“Jake was someone who could light it up offensively,” Heaton said. “He was an extremely good shooter and developed into an excellent all-around player. He rebounded, defended and did a great job of getting his teammates involved.”
LOGAN SMITH, Martins Ferry — This senior put the finishing touches on an outstanding prep career with an impressive season for Coach Derek Edwards’ team.
Smith finished with a 15.4 points per game average. He also yanked down seven rebounds, passed out 2.7 assists and swatted two shots a night. For good measure, he was charted for 1.5 steals per game.
Smith finished his career as the fifth all-time leading scorer in Purple Rider basketball history with 1,178 points.
Smith was named to the All-Eastern District, All-District 12 and All-Buckeye 8 squads.
“Logan is an outstanding player and individual who represented our school and program to the highest standard,” Edwards said.
AUSTON HOGUE, Monroe Central — This senior was a true leader by example for Coach Jon Perkins squad.
Hogue scored 12.2 points a game. He also averaged 7.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.8 steals per contest.
Along with this accolade, Hogue was recognized on All-Eastern District, All-District 12, All-MOVL and on the All-State team.
“Auston played the game the way it was meant to be played,” Perkins said. “His relentless effort created numerous opportunities for us both offensively and defensively. His presence will be greatly missed next year.”
MALACHI ROSE-BURTON, Monroe Central — This junior standout really came on as the season progressed.
Rose-Burton averaged 12.9 points a game and also posted 6.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2 steals per contest.
Rose-Burton was also named on the All-District 12 and Eastern District teams.
“Malachi was a game-changing presence for us at numerous points this season,” Perkins said. “His athleticism and overall skill set allowed us to be multi-faceted on each end of the floor. We’re looking forward to big things from him next year.”
ADAM BAKER, Beallsville — This senior standout capped an impressive career by surpassing the 1,000-point mark for the Blue Devils.
Baker averaged a double-double throughout the season at 18.4 points and 11.2 rebounds.
He was named on the All-District 12 and All-Eastern District team.
“Adam was a major contributor on our team and made his teammates better because of his work ethic,” Beallsville head coach Terry Jarrett said.
BRODY LOLLATHIN, River — This sophomore made significant strides this season as the point guard for Coach Mark Romick’s team.
Lollathin averaged 12.1 points and shot 71% from the foul line en route to scoring 255 points for the season.
Lollathin has been recognized as All-Eastern District and All-District 12.
“Brody does so many things well on the court that go unnoticed,” Romick said. “He’s a stat-sheet stuffer, who at the end of games will have many positives on a stat sheet. He has matured quickly as a point guard and continues to work to get better. He has the intangibles that coaches love in players.”
TY LONG, River — This sophomore has continued to develop into an all-around player for Romick’s Pilots.
Long posted another impressive campaign, averaging 14.1 points a game, scoring 281 points and shooting 64% from the foul line. His outside game grew, which was proven by the fact that he hit 24 bonus goals.
Along with this accolade, Long has been recognized on the All-District 12 and Eastern District squads.
“Ty’s progression as a player has been great in just two seasons,” Romick said. “He’s really developed a perimeter game to go along with his inside game. He faced many double teams in the post this season and was able to step away from the bucket and score. He works continually to get better, dedicating a lot of time to basketball. That’s paying off for him.”
RYAN MCCORT, St. Clairsville — This Red Devils junior emerged into a go-to-guy for Coach Ryan Clifford’s Red Devils.
McCort averaged 18 points a game en route to Second Team All-Ohio accolades.
He also collected five rebounds a night.
McCort was named to the All-Eastern District First Team and All-District 12 squad. He was also voted onto the All-Buckeye 8 team.
“Going into the season, we had a ton of scoring to replace from the season before, and Ryan took it upon himself to assume that role right from the start,” Clifford said. “He deserve every award he gets. In the midst of all of the restrictions, from last summer, he made sure he found a basket somewhere to work on his game and the results speak for themselves.”
DREW SEFSICK, St. Clairsville — This Red Devils’ junior is the “type of player every good team needs” according to Clifford.
Sefsick did a little bit of everything. He scored 12.5 points a game, shot 79% from the foul line and was among the top rebounders for the Red Devils.
“It’s no coincidence that when Drew got his basketball legs underneath him, his game took off and so did our season,” Clifford said. “There was a good part of January and early February when he was impressive on both ends of the floor.”
KOREY BECKETT, Shadyside — This junior built on a solid sophomore season and had an even bigger junior campaign for Coach Ed Andes’ team.
Beckett led the Orange in scoring with a 15.4 points per game average. He also connected on 50, 3-pointers, which tied for fifth best in the immediate area.
“Korey has put a ton of time into his game to get to the level he is,” Andes said. “He was the main guy that everyone we played focused on to stop. He works a ton on his game in the offseason and he’s reaped the rewards.”
LUKE MERRITT, Union Local — This senior put forth another impressive campaign for Coach Zach Delman’s squad.
Merritt averaged 15 points a game and shot 75% from the foul line. He also connected on 51, 3-point goals. He pulled down 3.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals. He finished his career with 1,001 points.
Merritt was All-District 12, All-Buckeye 8 and All-Eastern District. He was listed on the All-Ohio team for the second straight season.
“Luke is a model of what it means to be a student-athlete,” Delman said. “He’s near the top of his (graduating) class and literally does all the little things as an athlete. He never missed a practice, always put forth maximum effort and time in the summer months both in the gym and weight room. He’s a product of commitment to the program.”
NATHAN MEYER, Union Local — This senior was one of the Jets’ glue guys this season and throughout his career.
Meyer averaged 10.9 points a night, shot 62.9% from the foul line. He also collected 3.9 rebounds, handed out 3.1 assists and took 22 charges. He finished his career with 45 charges taken, which is a UL record.
“Nathan, in my opinion, is the best scrap/hustle player in UL boys basketball history,” Delman said. “He always played with a relentless motor and gave everything he had in order to help his team win. Without Nathan in the starting lineup the last two years, we probably wouldn’t have won half the games we did.”
