Program-Record Seven Lancers Earn All-Big South Postseason Awards - Longwood Athletics

FARMVILLE, Va. – Highlighted by two-time Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and All-Big South first-team defender Carrie Reaver, Longwood had a program-record seven players earn Big South women's soccer postseason honors in the conference's annual awards release Tuesday.

A four-year starting defender and now three-time All-Big South selection, Reaver repeated as Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and for the first time earned a spot on the conference first team. She spearheaded a Lancer contingent that included All-Big South second-team forward Kiersten Yuhas and All-Big South honorable mention forwards Kennedy Culbreath and Alex Dinger, defenders Kylie Cahill and Emily Mothersbaugh, and goalkeeper Madison Van Dyke.

In total, seven of Longwood's starting 11 – including three defenders and a goalkeeper – earned All-Big South recognition following a 2021 spring in which the Lancers opened the year with a seven-game unbeaten streak and finished the regular season with a 4-2-3 Big South record. Their season continues in this evening's Big South semifinal, which pits No. 4 seed Longwood against No. 1 seed High Point tonight at 7 p.m. in High Point, N.C.

In eight seasons as a member of the Big South, Longwood has now had 24 players haul in 40 All-Big South awards. Cahill, Dinger, Mothersbaugh and Yuhas are all first-timers this year, while Reaver earned her third all-league citation, and Culbreath and Van Dyke earned their second.

Reaver, who boasts a 4.0 grade point average as a biology and Spanish double major, also became only the sixth player in Big South women's soccer history to twice earn the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. That award is also the third in the past four years for the Lancers following the recognition of Teresa Fruchterman – also a biology major – in 2017.

A 5-8 defender from Thurmont, Md., Reaver's scholar award and her All-Big South first-team honor come by virtue of a senior season in which she has started all nine games and helped the Lancers surrender the fourth-fewest goals and shots on goal in the Big South. Longwood posted five shutouts in nine games, enjoyed a 419-minute shutout streak that included three consecutive clean sheets, and held five of nine opponents to three or fewer shots on goal.

Reaver, who was an All-Big South second-team honoree last season, gives the Lancers an All-Big South first-team defender for a sixth consecutive year following Taylor Alvey's selection in 2019, Sydney Wallace's in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and Alana Mackey's in 2015.

On the opposite end of the field, Yuhas was named to the All-Big South second team in her second season as a Lancer after leading the team eight points in her nine games. She scored twice and dished four assists, contributing the game-winning goal in a 4-0 Big South win against Winthrop and assisting on game-winning goals against Presbyterian and UNC Asheville. Her eight points ranked her among the Big South's top 10 in both points and assists per game and also earned her the first Big South Offensive Player of the Week of her career on March 30.

Yuhas' fellow forwards Alex Dinger and Kennedy Culbreath followed her with spots on the All-Big South honorable mention list. Dinger was one of only four freshman to receive all-conference recognition in 2021, doing so with a resume that featured two game-winning goals and three scores total. She is the first Lancer freshman to earn a spot on an All-big South team since Sydney Wallace's first-team award in 2016.

Meanwhile, Culbreath was named to the All-Big South honorable mention squad for a second straight year, following last year's award with a four-assist campaign as a senior. She also scored a goal – the 10th of her career – to join former All-Big Souths tandout Kelsey Pardue as the only players in Longwood's Big South era to amass double-digit goals and assists in a career.

In addition to Reaver's first-team award, Longwood's backline was well-represented with her fellow defenders Cahill and Mothersbaugh, and keeper Van Dyke all earning recognition on the All-Big South honorable mention team. Cahill's recognition came on the strength of a breakthrough junior season in which she started every game and led the team with 860 minutes, playing all but 10 minutes all season. That performance followed an injury-shortened sophomore season in 2019, from which she bounced  back to join Reaver and Mothersbaugh in making the Lancers one of the most formidable backfields in the Big South.

Mothersbaugh also had a breakout year, but of a different short as she transitioned from her prior role as an offensive-minded forward to a full-time defender as a senior. The switch paid dividends for the Lancers all season, as the do-it-all senior started every game and played 784 minutes – fifth-most on the team – to help her fellow senior Van Dyke amass five shutouts. A three-year starter, she played at least 90 minutes five times, including two triple-digit performances in a pair of overtime draws.

Backing that defensive unit once again in 2021 was Van Dyke, who in her third year as a starter received her second straight All-Big South honorable mention award. She finished second in the Big South with five shutouts and among the Big South's top four with a 0.76 goals against average and a .781 save percentage. For her career, she enters the Big South Championship tournament ranked No. 3 on Longwood's all-time Division I leaderboard with a 1.05 goals against average, fourth with a .786 save percentage and fifth with 16 wins.
