Not only did Karsten Collins, Fields and Gianotti all win their events, but they all set personal-best marks in each as well. Karsten Collins hit a new PR in the men's discus with a throw of 150-04 to take first. He hit his top throw on his final attempt. Fields picked up his new PR in the men's long jump, reaching a distance of 23-04.50 to take first. His top jump came on his final attempt as well. Gianotti tallied her new PR in the women's shot put with a throw of 45-00.50 to take first. Her top throw came on her fifth attempt.
While those three results were all first-place finishes, WOU had several other strong results. Caitlin Heldt, running in her first women's 10,000-meter, went right down to the final lap with Northwest Nazarene's Bethany Danner before Danner took first with a time of 37:09.29, to just hold off Heldt's time of 37:13.13, which ranks third on the WOU all-time list.
Jenelle Hurley reached the podium in the women's high jump hitting a height of 5-03.75 to come in third. Teammate Amity Deters also reached a height of 5-03.75, but she cleared on her third attempt which placed her fourth, while Hurley cleared her attempt on the first try.
Gianotti just missed another podium finish in the women's discus with her throw hitting 128-02 to come in fourth. That was just behind Western Washington's Taliah Coe's third-place throw of 131-01.
Owen Collins was close to a podium result in the men's shot put with a throw of 48-04.75 to come in fourth. Same for JJ Walker in the men's pole vault, as his height of 14-06.25 placed him fourth. That was just behind Saint Martin's Andrew Alfred's height of 15-00.25.
Hurley added a fifth-place finish in the women's long jump hitting a distance of 18-03.75.
Sam Cole and Karsten Collins weren't far behind Owen Collins in the men's shot put with Cole coming in sixth with a distance of 45-11.75 and Karsten Collins in seventh with the same mark of 45-11.75. Cole ended up placing ahead of Karsten by having the next best throw of the six during the event.
While Karsten Collins won the men's discus, his brother Owen Collins came close to a podium finish in the event before placing fifth with a throw of 142-07.
Other events that were finals on Friday included the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with Dominic Giordano leading the way for the Wolves with a time of 9:14.69. Bailey Smith was right behind in sixth with a time of 9:16.01 and Keanu Daos rounded out the group for the Wolves coming in 11th. It was a new PR time for Giordano at WOU in the event and Smith knocked almost four seconds off his season-best time in the event.
Kaiya Leamy trimmed a few ticks off her season-best time in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase coming in ninth.
Behind Fields in the men's long jump, Deshaun Stevens was in scoring position coming in eighth with a distance of 22-01.50. Walker placed 10th with a distance of 21-11.00.
Liliana Lyness-Morales competed in the women's shot put getting into scoring position coming in eighth hitting a distance of 38-05.00.
Makenize Smith placed 11th in the women's high jump and Lauren Berry came in 14th in the women's long jump.
Cedar Davis-Frankfort placed 15th in the men's 10,000-meter.
In the men's 800-meter prelims, WOU had four qualify for the finals. Hunter Hutton crossed at 1:53.34, Justin Crosswhite at 1:52.03, Timothy Rambo at 1:54.25 and Max Carmona at 1:54.41 all advanced to the finals for Saturday. Trey Reed just missed getting into the finals with a time of 1:54.98. Emmett Klus crossed in 11th with a time of 1:55.39, Adam Alnazer in 12th with a time of 1:55.49, Curt Knott in 13th with a time of 1:56.03 and Dustyn Mckenney came in 16 with a time of 1:58.26.
Aaron Hanible qualified in the men's 400-meter hurdles posting a time of 56.11 to come in fourth. Deshaun Stevens came in 12th in the event.
Michaela Yonkman qualified in the women's 400-meter hurdles coming in fifth with a time of 1:06.06. Ana Popchock was close to getting into the final field coming in ninth with a time of 1:08.25. Rilee Carstensen came in 11th with a time of 1:09.19 and Madeline Lambing in 14th with a time of 1:11.88.
Gabe Arce-Torres competed in the men's 200-meter dash coming in 11th with a time of 22.75.
Hanible almost qualified for both hurdles events, competing in the men's 110-meter hurdles coming in ninth with a time of 15.66. Popchock qualified in the women's 100-meter hurdles coming in sixth with a time of 14.95. Maliyah Thompson was close crossing at 15.25 to come in 10th. Yonkman came in 12th with a time of 15.48 and Hurley in 14th with a time of 15.56.
Maya Hopwood improved on her season-best time in the women's 100-meter dash posting a time of 12.13 to come in sixth and qualify for the finals. Hopwood's time moves her into a tie for fourth on the WOU all-time list. Thompson was close to qualifying as well before coming in ninth with a time of 12.37.
Dominique Loggins hit a new season-best time in the men's 100-meter dash crossing at 10.74 to come in second and advance to the finals. Jarren Ford came in 12th with a time of 11.14.
Team scores after the first day has WOU in third on the men's side with 56 points, just behind Central Washington in second with 60 points. Western Washington holds the lead with 96 points. On the women's side, WOU is also in third with 45 points, with Central Washington in second with 52 points. Western Washington holds the lead with 78 points.
Day two of the GNAC Outdoor Championships will resume tomorrow (Saturday) beginning with field events around 12 p.m.
