ROSEMONT, Ill. – Five Big Ten women’s soccer standouts from four conference schools were named 2020-21 United Soccer Coaches All-Americans, the national coaching organization announced Thursday. It marks the third consecutive season the Big Ten has had at least five women’s soccer All-America selections.
Big Ten Champion and NCAA Tournament Round of 16 participant Penn State had two student-athletes named All-Americans this season, with sophomore forward Ally Schlegel earning first-team honors and senior midfielder Frankie Tagliaferri named a second-team selection. It’s the first All-America citation for both players.
Schlegel, the Big Ten Forward of the Year and a semifinalist for the 2020-21 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, is the 26th first-team All-American in Penn State history and the first since defender Kaleigh Riehl in 2018. Schlegel is also the first Nittany Lion forward to earn first-team honors since Maya Hayes in 2011 and 2012. Meanwhile, Tagliaferri is PSU’s second second-team All-American in as many seasons, following Riehl’s 2019 selection.
Rutgers senior forward Amirah Ali was also a first-team All-American this season, while Wisconsin senior goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer joined Tagliaferri on the second team and Ohio State senior defender Izzy Rodriguez was a third-team All-American.
Ali, a two-time MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, earns her third All-America citation and second consecutive first-team honor (she was a second-team choice in 2018), becoming the first three-time All-America in program history. She is also the first Scarlet Knight position player to be a first-team All-American, as well as the first Rutgers player at any position to be a two-time first-team All-America selection.
Bloomer, the two-time Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, also garnered her second All-America certificate, having earned first-team honors in 2019. She is the fourth Badger ever to earn multiple All-America awards in her career and the first since four-time All-America midfielder Rose Lavelle from 2013-16.
Rodriguez, the Big Ten Defender of the Year, is the 10th Ohio State player to earn All-America honors from United Soccer Coaches and the first since 2017, when Morgan Wolcott was a second-team selection and Nikki Watts was a third-team choice.
