KANSAS CITY, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw a pair of Eagles be named Academic All-District, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today, July 15, in graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) and junior Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth).
Bryant has maintained a 3.73 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in health administration while recording a phenomenal year across both the indoor and outdoor seasons. At the GVSU Snowdown Showdown, the graduate student produced the second-best mark in the weight throw in school history at 21.87m, Feb. 5. The toss qualified him for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., where he finished 11th overall with a 21.13m heave, earning him Second Team All-American status.
In his first outdoor meet of the year, and first since 2019, the Oklahoma product showed off his skills in the hammer throw notching a program-best 66.01m toss at the Raleigh Relays, March 25. A month later, Bryant registered a school-record in the discus throw with a launch of 58.27m for first place at the Knights Invite, April 24.
After strong showings at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, May 26-29. the graduate student managed to punch his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. in both the hammer and discus. In the hammer throw, the Edmond, Okla. native improved upon his previous best with a colossal 67.42m heave for 16th in the competition, June 9, and was named a Second Team All-American once more.
Devaney, an economics major, boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.99 while proving to be a reliable harrier for the Eagles. In the fall, the junior helped lead his team to a Mid-American Conference title after placing fourth in 24:22.6 on the 8K course, Nov. 21, 2020.
The New Zealand product then put his athleticism on full display at the 2021 MAC Indoor Championships, pacing the field in the 5000m race, crossing the finish line in 14:17.81 followed by two other Eagles to sweep the event, Feb. 26. For his efforts, Devaney was named the league's Most Outstanding Track Performer. During the outdoor season, the New Plymouth, New Zealand native recorded a personal-best time in the 5K of 13:59.12 at the Rick Erdmann Twilight meet, April 17, which qualified him for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships.
The Green and White will be back in action this fall with the start of the cross country season.
