The ITA Preseason No. 97-ranked men's tennis player in the country passed his first test Monday at the rugged ITA All-American Championships with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jeff Middleton of Power Five Conference program Arizona at the Case Tennis Center in LaFortune Park.
The junior from Zagreb, Croatia will face off against Guido Marson of Texas A&M on Tuesday in the Qualifying Bracket round of 128.
Tonejc needs three more wins to reach the round of 16 that advances him into the star-studded Main Draw where five of the top 10-ranked players in the nation are featured led by No. 3 Daniel Rodrigues of South Carolina.
Tonejc carried over some of that Power Five magic into the Qualifying doubles round, teaming with freshman Marino Jakic to knock off Kentucky's Gabriel Diallo and Francois Musitelli 7-6(4), 7-5.
"The guys played fantastic doubles," said coach Matt Brothers. "They applied constant pressure on their opponents' service games. There was aggressive movement and they served huge."
The DePaul doubles run came to an end Monday night when Jakic and Tonejc fell 6-2, 6-3 to Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang of Duke.
Jakic, Tripp Tuff and Luuk Wassenaar will be shouting their support from the sideline Tuesday as Tonejc battles his way through the Qualifying singles bracket.
