Four-Time All-MAC Pick Lopez Highlights Field Hockey's Awards Haul

Field Hockey /

FARMVILLE, Va. – Highlighted by senior Luna Lopez's milestone fourth career All-MAC first-team award and freshman Maroussia Walckiers' MAC Freshman of the Year honor, the Mid-American Conference recognized four Lancers in the league's annual postseason awards announced Thursday by the conference office.

Lopez joined fellow Argentinian and defender Ana Paula Lazaro in earning All-MAC first-team recognition, while senior Sophia Loscher was named to the All-MAC second team and Walckiers was recognized as the league's top freshman.

Those awards come on the heels of a third-place finish in the MAC's regular season that earned the Lancers a spot in this weekend's MAC Championship in Oxford, Ohio. Behind those four and the rest of Longwood's veteran-laden squad, the Lancers led the MAC with 2.87 goals per game and ranked second with a 1.60 goals against average.

Lopez becomes only the ninth player in MAC field hockey history to earn four consecutive All-MAC first-team honors and the first such Lancer to do so. A native of San Rafael, Argentina, she started all 15 games and led the Lancer defense to six shutouts and a league-low 24 goals allowed while also leading Longwood with seven goals, seven assists and 21 points.

Meanwhile, Walckiers joined Lopez, and former Lancer Camila Duarte, in being named MAC Freshman of the Year, giving Longwood three of the MAC's top rookie awards since joining the conference in 2014. A product of Kraainem, Belgium, Walckiers started all 15 games during her first year with Lancers, recording two assists and four goals to rank among Longwood's top three goal-scorers.

In Lazaro's second year with the Lancers, she earned her first career All-MAC first-team honor alongside her backfield mate Lopez. Also from San Rafael, Argentina, Lazaro recorded seven goals this season, tying Lopez for the Lancers' most this fall. Lazaro also recorded two assists, and two game-winning goals, one of which came during the 3-0 victory over App. State.

Loscher received All-MAC second-team recognition in 2021, the second All-MAC award of her career following a second-team honor in 2019. From Heidelberg, Germany, Loscher scored four goals on 25 shots from the midfield line and recorded four assists, tying Walckiers' for Longwood's third-most assists.

Lazaro, Lopez, Loscher and Walckiers will lead the Lancers into the MAC Championship semifinal against No. 2 Kent State this Friday at 2:30 p.m. on No. 1 seed Miami's home turf in Oxford, Ohio. A win would propel Longwood into the MAC Championship game where they would face the winner of Miami and No. 4 seed Ohio Saturday at 2 p.m.
