Lydle, Johnston, Bains Headline Mountaineer All-RMAC Selections - Western Colorado University Athletics

GUNNISON, Colo.  On Thursday morning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) released its all-conference and honorable mention teams for the 2021 football season. The Mountaineers had 20 student athletes earn recognition, while head coach Jas Bains earned RMAC Coach of the Year.

Coach Bains led the Mountaineers to a 10-1 overall record, 8-1 RMAC, and their first RMAC championship since 1998. That dominatant regular-season performance from the Mountaineers resulted in the team earning its first playoff appearance since 1997.

Will Lydle was named RMAC Defensive Player of the Year for his impressive performance at defensive tackle where he had 15 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Lydle also earned RMAC First Team All-Conference distinction.

Defensive end Anthony Johnston had a great season for Mountaineers earning him the RMAC Defensive Freshman of the Year award. Johnston recorded 6.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and was an Honorable Mention recipient.

Running over defenses all season, running back Josh Cummings earned an RMAC First Team All-Conference selection. Cummings rushed for 1,182 yards on 244 attempts, averaging 4.6 yards per carry and accumulating 16 touchdowns.

Helping block for Cummings was offensive lineman Clayton Martin who was named to the RMAC First Team. Behind Martin the Mountaineers had the No. 2 ranked rush offense.

Inside linebacker Lane Farris got into the opposing backfield at will throughout the season and earned RMAC First Team All-Conference. Farris led the Mountaineers with 17.5 tackles for loss, had 8.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and was second in total tackles with 54.

Kicker Alec Fonseca was named to the RMAC First Team Special Teams, hitting on 9-of-14 of his field goal attempts. 

Joey Orrino was just as important on that offensive line earning him RMAC Second Team All-Conference. Orrino and fellow lineman did a great job blocking on their way to being No. 2 in total touchdowns on offense (49) and No. 3 in sacks given up (26).

Wyatt Buhr was a solid tackler for the Mountaineers this season which earned him RMAC Second Team All-Conference. Buhr led the Mountaineer defense with 57 total tackles, had 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Connor Desch, Malik White, Damian Macias, Dominic Chance, Tim Mullin, Dominick Fletcher, Darrious Gaines, Robert Garlock, Elijah Garcia Gillespie, Jack Anderson, Mathyus Su'a, and Cole Riters were all named to the honorable mention team.
