Composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Terrace Martin has made a career out of working with some of the heaviest hitters in rap, pop and jazz, from Kendrick Lamar, Rapsody and Anderson .Paak to Kamasi Washington, Snoh Aalegra and Robert Glasper. His latest solo album, Drones, brings all these worlds together to celebrate Black music while taking a critical look at how disconnected and unfeeling the world has become. On this week's show, we listen to Martin's new work and talk about why he calls the album a "Black Disneyland."
We've also got new ones from Snail Mail, the transcendent voice of Tasha, a burst of love and joy from Curtis Harding, the blood-slowing sounds of Attacca Quartet and more. WBEZ and Vocalo radio host and DJ Ayana Contreras joins NPR's LaTesha Harris and Tom Huizenga, contributor Christina Lee, Radio Milwaukee's Tarik Moody and contributor Cyrena Touros, along with host Robin Hilton, as they share their picks for the best albums out on Nov. 5.
