All San Francisco wants for Christmas is not Christmas music - San Francisco Chronicle

The winter holidays may be several weeks away, but the holiday music season is in full swing, sweeping department store loudspeakers and transforming Americans’ music-listening habits.

However, San Franciscans — at least, San Francisco Spotify users — appear to be embracing this trend a bit less enthusiastically than the U.S. as a whole.

Spotify releases weekly charts by its region’s listeners showing the 100 most popular songs streaming that week. The Chronicle examined the company’s most recent charts, which encompass the week of Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, for the nine most populous American cities, plus San Francisco and the nation overall. (We would have looked at the 10 most populous, but the 10th, San Jose, isn’t available separately on the platform.) We then counted the total number of overtly Christmas- and winter holiday-themed songs that appeared on each region’s top 100 most popular song list for that week.

Overall, the data shows that the country as a whole loves holiday music quite a bit more than its biggest cities do. The U.S. currently has 31 holiday-themed songs on its top 100, meaning nearly a third of its biggest hits right now are Christmasy. The average number of holiday songs across the cities we looked at, meanwhile, was just 16.5.

So far, San Francisco’s Spotify users are liking Christmas music even less than most major cities. The city has just 14 Christmas songs on its top 100 right now. That’s fewer songs than six of the nine major cities we looked at, and far lower than the U.S. overall. Los Angeles is the musical Grinch of the group, with only nine Christmas-themed songs in its top 100.

Philadelphia, on the other hand, is the most Christmas music-obsessed major city in the country as of late November. One-quarter of the city’s current 100 most streamed songs are Christmas-themed.

We also calculated a “Christmas score” for each region based on their Christmas songs’ positions on the top-100 charts; a higher score indicates that the city has more Christmas-themed songs higher on their charts, while a lower score indicates it has fewer Christmas songs that are getting streamed less. For the score, a song with a ranking of No. 1 receives 100 points, a song with a No. 2 ranking 99 points, and so on.

The Christmas scores for each city line up fairly well with the number of songs each has on its chart, though Phoenix and San Antonio’s positions are switched. Philadelphia has the highest Christmas score of any city, at around 1,200 — though the country’s overall is still significantly higher, at almost 1,600.

While the overall popularity of holiday music in each city may vary widely, the top songs remain remarkably consistent. The single most popular holiday-themed tune in every place is, unsurprisingly, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” In the last week of November, the effervescent sing-along favorite made it to the top 20 most-streamed list in every region, and in the U.S. overall, it stood at No. 6.

The average ranking of Carey’s smash hit across cities is 11.4. Some other favorite tracks across cities include “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” as performed by Brenda Lee (15.8), “White Christmas” as performed by Bing Crosby (17.9) and “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms (19.3).

The holiday season is still early, and perhaps L.A. and San Francisco’s scores will rise relative to other areas’ as Christmas and other winter holidays inch closer. Only time, and additional data, will tell.
