Four Pokes Land on Cross Country Academic All-Conference Teams - McNeese State University Athletics - McNeese Athletics

LAKE CHARLES- Following a Southland Conference Championship on the men's side, and third place finish on the women's side, a total of four McNeese Cowboys and Cowgirls earned Academic All-Conference distinctions, the league announced Wednesday.

Senior's Henry Kiplagat and Gideon Cheplak landed on Men's Cross Country All-Academic First Team. Kiplagat (Hajuru, Kenya) earned a 3.54 gpa while pursuing a degree in General Studies. Cheplak (Eldoret, Kenya) has a 3.04 gpa studying General Studies – Applied & Natural Science.

Sophomore Aureila Jepkorir (Kapsbet, Kenya) was an automatic selection to the Women's Cross Country All-Academic First Team, she had a 3.40 gpa as a general studies major. Teammate Alissa Lander (Minden, La.) earned recognition on the Women's Cross Country All-Academic Second Team, she logging a 3.06 gpa in general studies. 

Gideon Cheplak, the reigning SLC Newcomer of the Year, finished third overall to lead the Cowboys in the 8-kilometer race with a time of 24:38.66 at the conference championships. He also led the Cowboys at the 2021 NCAA South Central Region Cross Country Meet, garnering All-Region honors with a 23rd place individual finish. Kiplagat placed ninth at 25:09.15 at the conference championship while finishing in 36th place at 32:16.0 at the regional meet. 

Aureila Jepkorir finished in fifth place mark and a time of 21:54.4 to earn first team all-conference honors at the conference meet. She also placed 69th at 22:38.7 in the women's 6k at regionals. Alissa Lander placed ninth at 22:03.44 at the SLC tournament, she also finished 61st running a time of 22:29.8 at the NCAA South Central Region Cross Country Meet. 

Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are voted upon by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each school. To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average through the semester prior to the sport's championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions during the most recently completed season.
