Dumont De Chassart finished among the top-10 in six out of eight tournaments during the spring season, including a trio of top-five finishes. The Academic All-Big Ten honoree capped his junior season tying for second place at the Big Ten Championships and earning a spot on the All-Championships team. A native of Villers La Ville, Belgium, Dumont de Chassart finished second on the team in stroke average (71.04) in 2021, while tying for the team lead as the Illini's top finisher at three events this season. This is the 12th Golfer of the Year honor for Illinois and eighth in the last 10 years.
Schaake capped his senior season tying for second at the Big Ten Championships. The 2019 Big Ten Golfer of the Year finished among the top-five in five out of six tournaments during the spring seasons, highlighted by four top-two results. The Omaha native recorded a 70.89 scoring average in 2021, earning a No. 42 Golfstat national ranking. Schaake claims Iowa’s fourth Golfer of the Year honor and the first Hawkeye to repeat as Big Ten Golfer of the Year.
Merchant captured the Freshman of the Year laurel after carding six top-15 finishes during the 2021 campaign. The Noblesville, Ind., native paced the Hoosiers during the final round of the Big Ten Championships, carding a 2-under-par 70 on Sunday to move up 17 spots and tie for 13th place. Merchant becomes Indiana’s third Freshman of the Year honoree and first since Jorge Campillo in 2006.
Stith led the Hawkeyes to finishes of fourth or better in five of seven tournaments this spring. Iowa won the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island (March 9) and the Hawkeye Invitational (April 18), and placed second at the Big Ten Championships and Big Ten Match Play. Iowa capped the 2021 season with a 288.61 scoring average and a No. 32 Golfstat national ranking. Stith claims his first Coach of the Year laurel and Iowa’s first since Lynn Blevins in 1992.
The All-Big Ten first team features Illinois’ Michael Feagles, Jerry Ji and Dumont De Chassart, Indiana’s Merchent, Iowa’s Mac McClear and Schaake, Michigan State’s James Piot and Minnesota’s Angus Flanagan, with Dumont De Chassart and McClear both earning unanimous first-team nods.
The Big Ten also recognized 14 Sportsmanship Award honorees. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The complete list of honorees can be found below.
