McRainey (Shallotte, N.C. / West Brunswick HS) carries a 3.55 cumulative GPA in his accounting major. The 6-0, 217-pound sophomore will now advance to the CoSIDA All-America® ballot, with a first and second team in Division I set to be announced in mid-December.
The two-time Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week leads the league and ranks No. 12 nationally with 101 total tackles (52 solo) through 10 starts in 2021. He ranks second on the team with 10.0 tackles for loss, has forced a pair of fumbles and posted a 71-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Campbell on October 9.
This past weekend, McRainey was in on a career-best 18 total tackles (nine solo) and had a key sack late in the game vs. Charleston Southern. He was all over the field in a September win over Western Carolina, collecting 17 total tackles and playing a grueling 99 defensive snaps.
In 14 career starts, dating back to his freshman spring season, McRainey has 121 tackles. He leads a defense that ranks No. 2 nationally in defensive touchdowns (4), No. 14 in turnovers gained (20), No. 18 in tackles for loss (7.1 per game), No. 24 in fumbles recovered (9), No. 24 in red zone defense (73%) and No. 25 in passes intercepted (11).
McRainey was one of only two sophomores named to the District III squad, which includes FBS and FCS programs in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
He is Gardner-Webb's ninth CoSIDA Academic All-District III selection in the sport of football since moving to NCAA Division I in 2000.
